Prunus spinosa is a large, bushy deciduous shrub that grows just over 2 m high. The common name blackthorn comes from the very thorny branches and the very dark bark. The leaves are oval and dark green. The white, rich-blooming flowers appear in March and April and they are followed by edible, bluish black berries in late summer. This shrub grows best in sun to partial shade. It prefers fertile soils. Prunus spinosa is frequently confused with the related Prunus cerasifera (cherry plum).- Flowering Period April, May
