Product information "Cape gooseberry 'Fruttosa'"
With Fruttosa, the typical vanilla and coconut aroma is complemented by a pleasant fruit acid. There is no end to the snacking!Harvest: about the same as ‘Peter's Beste’; the stems of this variety adhere strongly to the bush and the ripe fruit can easily be pressed out of its casing
Fruit: Medium-sized, yellow-orange
Flavour: Compared to ‘Peter's Beste’ and ‘Little Buddha’, it provides a new component: exotic fruitiness. The sweet vanilla and coconut flavour is accompanied by a pronounced fruit acid, which is almost addictive.
Growth: Upright and healthy, fast growing fruiting shrub
About Cape gooseberries
We know cape gooseberries (Physalis peruviana and Physalis pruinosa) from the beautifully decorated plates in restaurants. Maybe we've already seen them in a friend’s garden. But this simple and rewarding berry plant is generally still too rarely grown. The cape gooseberry is indeed not hardy in our climate; each year it must be newly planted (or overwintered), but in the same summer after planting, in early May, it has the almost miraculous ability to grow, to blossom, and bear abundant fruit. In the first year, if it has grown well, you can expect 100 and more fruits; after overwintering, up to 300 fruits are possible in the 2nd year. The beautiful, yellow-orange colour and the aroma that is reminiscent of coconut and vanilla offer an unrivalled addition to berry gardens as well as to containers on balconies and terraces. And another thing: the cape gooseberries are resistant to the spotted-wing drosophila, thanks to their typical calyx husks that act as protective tents.
