Product information "Goji berry Turgidus®"

The first really sweet goji berry Turgidus comes at the right moment. After many gardeners are disappointed by the bitter, older goji varieties that are susceptible to mildew and usually also less fertile, we have introduced Turgidus to the market; it is a variety that meets the main concerns of hobby gardeners. Goji turgidus is a goji variety that really should no longer be called wolfberry or boxthorn like the overgrown plants along highways and on waste site, as it regularly produces fruits, every year, usually in the first year after planting. The harvest is long-lasting; it starts in July and can last until late September. This goji variety is ideal for your daily muesli. And most important: the new variety Turgidus is the first goji breeding that is really sweet and unambiguously tasty. When compared directly with other varieties Turgidus is less susceptible to mites and mildew.

Maturity: From July to September
Flowers and fruits: The fruits are oblong, about 1 cm long, sometimes slightly grooved and on the inside mostly hollow and cylindrical. The colour is a reddish orange, but tends more towards orange, it is beautiful and striking. The fruits also have a high ornamental value. However, the numerous and very beautiful, purple flowers are too small to attract enough attention.
Flavour: When eaten fresh, the flavour is really sweet (almost all goji berries are sweet when dried); in contrast to the one to two other sweet varieties that we have also tested, the sweetness does not act as a camouflage for the bitter components, but it is genuine and sustainable. The benefit of 20 grams of goji berries per day that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) recommends becomes a real pleasure!
Yield: Goji turgidus bears fruits for a very long time; in the early years, it starts at the end of June and then produces ripe fruits for up to four months. Overall, it can provide good yields; 2-3 kg are relatively easy to reach.
Growth/health: Goji turgidus is vigorous growing, about 150-180 cm tall; when trained on an espalier, it can easily reach 200 cm. In our variety trials, Turgidus has much better resistance to mites than other varieties; a mildew infection can quite late occur in the season, but is then no longer bad. Even if there is mildew, we see a tendency that Turgidus outperform competing varieties.
Contents: Turgidus as well as other goji varieties are known to have a strong antioxidant potential, whereupon the majority of the health effects should be based. This is mostly due to the carotenoids (beta-carotene). There are also very high iron and vitamin C contents as well as vitamin A, B1 and B2 and various minerals.

Origin of the variety Turgidus
Lycium barbarum Goji turgidus was selected by Klaus Umbach from Chinese origins and was initially propagated for commercial cultivation. Its properties, namely the sweet fruits, less susceptibility to mildew and mites, and the long-lasting harvesting period from July to September, make Turgidus highly interesting for the home garden.

Location and soil
Plant Goji turgidus on a sunny and airy place. The flow of air is particularly important, particularly because mites do not like such circumstances.
Regarding the soil, the variety Turgidus, like all other goji plants, wolfberries and boxthorn, is tolerates almost everything: they grow on very poor, sandy or gravelly soils; and of course, the cultivated goji plants also appreciate better soil types, where they can establish themselves faster and grow stronger.

Fertilisation
Be reluctant to fertilised Goji turgidus. This plant gets what it needs itself. Too strong growth could also be at the expense of the fruitfulness.

Pruning and training
Goji turgidus can be grown as a shrub or on a trellis. In both types of training, it is important that the plant is heavily pruned in the spring in order to generate new growth. Goji have the ability to bear fruit immediately on this year's wood, that is, they form shoots, flowers and fruits in the same growing season. Goji shares this property with autumn raspberries or with modern, long-blooming roses.
