Product information "Saskatoon berry 'Saskalate'®"

Saskalate® is – as the name indicates – is the latest of the Saskatoon berries; they start to ripen in early July, which is relatively late. This variety produces a beautiful, round, up to 2 m tall shrub, with the largest clusters and berries of its kind. If you pick Saskalate® late enough (just before they start to burst), then they also have a fantastic taste which is strongly reminiscent of cherries and almonds. If the variety is picked barely ripe, the flavour is still somewhat green.

Flowers: At the end April, approx. 20 days after the normal Juneberries; Saskatoon are self-fertile, so they do not need a pollinator
Maturity: Early July, 10 days to 2 weeks after Saskablue®, up to 4 weeks after the earliest Saskatoon; relatively regular and uniform ripening compared to other varieties: at the maturity climax, 80% of the berries are ripe, 10% are mature and 10% are immature
Berries: Big, blue-frosted berries on large, almost hand-sized clusters; the clusters are the largest of all Saskatoon varieties
Taste: Sweet and juicy, only a slight taste of green harvesting; somewhat reminiscent of black cherries, sometimes with a slight hint of almond
Growth/health: Strong, dense and healthy growth, forms dense branches and is rounder than Saksablue®, also more vigorous than the early growing varieties
Location: Very adaptable, and good growth at pH level well above 7

How to prune Saskatoon berries Saskatoon berries must not be pruned in the first 3 years after planting. Then it makes sense every year to cut back one of the oldest, thickest shoots completely in order to create more space for new fruiting shoots. Without this measure, the shrub gets too woody in the lower half and only bears fruit on top.

Saskalate vs Saskablue (Nicola Bindon)

I'm struggling to choose between the two varieties you sell (and others sold elsewhere). Please can you give me any more info on the differences e.g. do they both grow to the same height & spread; and is the difference in habit mentioned (bushier v more upright) very significant? I'm not bothered about berries ripening at the same time. Thanks
