Product information "Cape gooseberry 'Peters Best'"
The first time I ate this variety I was with Peter Haslhofer, the dahlia grower. And I was immediately amazed: 'Peters Beste', which is named after the dahlia breeder, is extremely fertile and starts to develop its flowers early. Then there is the excellent taste: this is no sign of the greenish, almost bitter taste, which sometimes accompanies store-bought Physalis. The fruits, every fruit, are a treat: sweet and juicy, with the typical coconut aroma and vanilla flavour at the end.Fruit: Medium-sized, round, yellow, light orange coloured, beautiful; very fast and early start of harvest, very large yield with up to 200 fruits; after overwintering in the 2nd year up to 450 fruits
Taste: Very sweet and pleasant, sweeter than Buddha, absolutely no bitter flavour like many market varieties, tastes like coconut, with an intense vanilla finish
Growth: Broad, bushy, slightly more compact than Buddha, good branching at the base; from a height of 50 cm, pinching promotes the fruit set and fruit quality
Care: Physalis can be grown successfully as an annual; it flowers and bears fruit in the same year. Cape gooseberries are perennial in their natural habitat; they are not hardy in our region, however the plants can be overwintered in a bright location at about 10-15°C.
Fertilisation: little or no fertiliser; too much fertiliser leads to vigorous growth and Physalis forms fewer flowers and fruits
Location: sunny; Physalis is an extremely warmth-loving plant
Harvest: from August well into the autumn months
Use: for snacking directly from the plants, salads and desserts, for decoration. The fruits are rich in provitamin A, also in vitamin B and vitamin C.
About Cape gooseberries
We know cape gooseberries (Physalis peruviana and Physalis pruinosa) from the beautifully decorated plates in restaurants. Maybe we've already seen them in a friend’s garden. But this simple and rewarding berry plant is generally still too rarely grown. The cape gooseberry is indeed not hardy in our climate; each year it must be newly planted (or overwintered), but in the same summer after planting, in early May, it has the almost miraculous ability to grow, to blossom, and bear abundant fruit. In the first year, if it has grown well, you can expect 100 and more fruits; after overwintering, up to 300 fruits are possible in the 2nd year. The beautiful, yellow-orange colour and the aroma that is reminiscent of coconut and vanilla offer an unrivalled addition to berry gardens as well as to containers on balconies and terraces. And another thing: the cape gooseberries are resistant to the spotted-wing drosophila, thanks to their typical calyx husks that act as protective tents.

Self-fertile variety? (Heidi Pintschovius)
Hello, I would like to try to grow physalis. I have only a patio, with limited space. Can I grow one plant only or does it need a neighbour for pollination? If it does, of the same or a different variety, especially, would the "biscuit" do, as it says, that the biscuit is not a Peruvians. If easier feel free to reply in Germany, as I'm German myself. Kind regards, Heidi Pintschovius
Self-fertile variety? (Lubera)
Hello Heidi, the cape gooseberries are self fruitful, are pollinating themselves. Kind regards your Lubera-Team
Cape Gooseberry - Peters Best (Lesley Warne)
Hi How tall are the bushes you supply (on average)? And I understand they don't like to cold weather during the Winter months. As I don't have a green house, could I bring the plant indoors or would that be too warm for it? I look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards Lesley
Peters Best (Sonja Dreher)
Hi
the plants are about 30 cm high when delivered. In Winter they have to be kept cool but frost-free, not over 10°Celsius. I think that answers the question about keeping it indoors ;-)
June planting? (Amanda )
Is mid/late june to late for planting?
June planting? (Sonja Dreher)
Hi
planting in June would be ok until middle of the month. After then it can be that the fruit do not ripen completely
how to prune physalis (zohre)
From what time to start pruning physalis؟ (i cultivated it in greenhouse) how do i prune it to have more fruit and the plant grew over than 2 years?
pruning (Sonja Dreher)
Hello,
the Gooseberry-bushes from last year, (or even older ones) are cut back to a height of about 1 meter. Leave just some of the strongest branches. They will make new side branches soon, which will bear a lot of fruit in summer.
kind regards
Your Lubera Team
