Lubera stops plant deliveries to the UK
Due to Brexit, we are not able to deliver to the UK. We are working on a solution on how we can continue to bring a wide range of Lubera plants to the UK and directly to our customers' homes in the future. However, such a solution will not be available before 2022 or 2023.

The Christening Of Lubera’s New Mini Pear

pironi_joy_of_kent_nr3_-1-_720

Readers of the Gardeners World newsletter were asked to send in their chosen name for a chance to win one of these superb pears.  The winning name decided upon was 'Joy Of Kent' which seemed to best describe the feeling of finding and tasting this pear in the Garden Of England.

But what is the story of this new mini fruit?  Joy Of Kent is indeed brand new, but has a well-documented and long history which goes back to the old French variety Nain vert (synonym Poire à bois monstrueux) that bore fruit  for the first time in 1839 and was found by M.de Nerbonne in France.

In two different breeding steps and crossing generations, in the second half of the last century,  Dr Frank Alston combined the quality of the pear varieties Conference, Comice and Packhams Triumph with the compact habit of Nain vert at the research station of East Malling. The goal of Dr. Alston was clear: to combine as much fruit quality as possible with the compact habit!

In the summer four years ago the Markus Kobelt of Lubera was working in a raspberry field and was completely engrossed in the flavours and growth types of the raspberry experiments...and he probably needed some rest; he stretched and looked around. And he saw, 20 metres away, a small row of trees with pears, including some very compact, extremely fertile specimens. And right next to it was his rental car, a Fiat 500 large, which had approximately the same height as these 25 year old trees.

In the same autumn, the fruits were tasted extensively and the best numbers were selected. And now they are ready for the first hobby gardeners and pear enthusiasts.
