Product information "Clematis alpina"

Clematis alpina is a species of wild fauna that has its distribution in the Alps, the Pyrenees, the Carpathians and the Balkans. It grows on forest edges, but also in ravines and rocks. All in all, this reliably frost hardy species can tolerate much more dryness than other clematis varieties. But it does not like waterlogging at all, so only plant in permeable soils!
As a spring bloomer, it opens its pretty, bright blue flowers starting in April. The main flowering season extends into May, single flowers follow in June. Each flower consists of 4 petals and has a diameter of 3 to 4 cm. The nodding form of the flower is very delicate.
With its compact growth of 200 to 300 cm, Clematis alpina can be used in many ways. It greens fences and trellises and it can grow wild in small trees or shrubs. Since it is very drought-tolerant, it can deal with many sites where other clematis species do not thrive well, for example under trees. It is also more shade tolerant than most other varieties.
The early bloom can be combined well with bulbs and early flowering perennials. With their small, nodding flowers, this wild species fits very well in natural gardens.
As Clematis alpina blooms on the old shoots, they can simply be left to grow. A regular pruning is not useful as you would remove the petals. If, after a few years, an occasional cutback is necessary, this is best done directly after the main flowering season, i.e. in June.
