Product information "Japanese Barberry 'Pink Queen'"

The red-flecked leaves of the colourful Japanese barberry 'Pink Queen' are something special in the plant kingdom. They form a beautiful play of colours with the yellow flowers that appear in May.
An exciting addition to the barberry range

The colourful Japanese barberry 'Pink Queen' is a wonderful addition to the barberry range. Barberry is characterised by its unpretentious nature; it is easy to cut, resistant to heat and drought, and wind stable, making it the ideal plant for planting along roads or in hot, dry places in the city centre. And now, Berberis thunbergii 'Pink Queen' also has a new exciting variety with red shoots, which form pink leaves with a greyish-white mottled appearance. It seems to be somewhat darker and less red in appearance than the similar species 'Harlequin'. The pretty leaves are joined in May by fresh, yellow flowers, which attract many insects. From these blossoms, bright red berries emerge in autumn. They are almost invisible between the dense, coloured leaves. If, however, the foliage falls after showing its reddish autumn colour, the berries will usually still stay on the plants. They remain decorative during the winter. The berries are edible, but quite sour in taste.
A defensive beauty

Those who knows barberries know that they know how to defend themselves by a multitude of defensive thorns. What is perhaps the pain of the gardener is another gardener’s pleasure. Barberries can be excellently used as hedge plants, and where a barberry hedge denies access to paradise, no cat, dog or other two-legged animal will venture into it. Thus, front gardens or other places can be shielded by visits from undesirable animals. The bird world also enjoys this plant; the feathered garden visitors can rest undisturbed in the dense barberry branches.
Growth and location

The colourful barberry 'Pink Queen' grows 1.25 m high and up to 2 m wide; it is very densely branched. The plant feels comfortable in both the shade and the sun; in a sunny or partially shaded spot the colouration is most beautiful. Berberis thunbergii 'Pink Queen' tolerates calcareous soils, but prefers acidic soils. This barberry is hardy in mountainous regions and in the north. Pruning is extremely simple: if only small shaping measures are desired, a hedge trimmer can also be used. Old plants can also be cut back into the old wood or can even be cut back to a stub for rejuvenation. Radical pruning should be done in late winter; lighter pruning can be done in the summer on overcast days so that the previously hidden leaves can get used to the more intense sun exposure.
Possible use

As a hedge plant, combining green-leaved or uniform, red-leaved barberries is very beautiful. But even solitary plantings or small groups are conceivable, as Berberis thunbergii 'Pink Queen' can also prevent unwanted visitors from coming onto your terrace/patio. Berberis thunbergii 'Pink Queen' can also be planted with area plantings or wild hedges.
