Product information "Hydrangea 'Blaumeise'"

The blooms of the hydrangea 'Blaumeise' are pink when the soil is alkaline; with a sinking pH value, the flowers rapidly turn blue and in acidic soil they are dark blue.
Growth and flowering

According to the name 'Blaumeise' (blue tit), this hydrangea has strongly dark blue flowers. Although the flower colour, like all blue hydrangeas, is dependent on the pH value of the soil, they become discoloured in neutral soil less than other hydrangea flowers. With an increasing pH value, the pink colour blends more and more into the blue colour, which is quite attractive. From June to September the flowers appear; they have large, marginal flowers, which surround the smaller, inner flowers, they join together into luxuriant inflorescences. Even after flowering, the inflorescences have a special charm. They last for a long time in the winter and can be used well as autumn decorations. The growth height is between 1 m and 1.3 m with a well-branched habit.
Blue flowers also in less acidic soil

In order to obtain a nice blue colouring, the hydrangea 'Blaumeise' needs an acidic soil, preferably at a pH value of 4.5 to 4. At a higher pH value, more and more pink is present in the flower colour, however the blue flower colour remains even with less acidic soil. Many gardening soils tend to have a higher pH value than 4.5. In order to maintain a strong, dark blue flower the plant should therefore be fertilised regularly with so-called “hydrangea blue”. This remedy is usually used when the closed flower buds are slowly starting to show their colour in June and will soon blossom. If a bog bed is already present, the hydrangea 'Blaumeise' can be safely planted near the rhododendrons. The ideal conditions for hydrangeas and rhododendrons are quite comparable. Both prefer a rich, nutrient-rich soil in a partially shaded site with a good supply of water. Especially during flowering, hydrangeas need a lot of water. The blooms can be easily burned in an overly sunny location.
Uncomplicated care

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Blaumeise' needs only slight pruning. The buds are developed in the previous year and in order to protect them from the low temperatures in the winter a wire mesh can be placed around the hydrangea. This can then be loosely filled with leaves. In the spring, only the old flowers should be removed. In order to rejuvenate the plant, some old and dense shoots can be removed.

The hydrangea 'Blaumeise' is a beautiful enrichment for traditional cottage gardens. Due to the blue flower colour, however, it can also be used in modern garden design. The combination with different coloured hydrangeas is particularly attractive.
