Product information "Oak-leaved Hydrangea 'Ruby Slippers'"

This hydrangea gets its name due to its slit leaves, which resemble the leaves of an oak tree. The large flowers appear from June to August and are at first almost white. As they increase in age, the flower colour changes from light pink to dark pink. In autumn, the leaves of this ornamental shrub shine in a warm shade of reddish brown.
This oak-leaved hydrangea is about 1.2 m high and 1.5 m wide, which makes it suitable for smaller gardens. It is thus significantly more compact than the 'Ice Crystal' variety.
This ornamental plant can be planted in a sunny or shaded site; it likes acidic to neutral, humus soils and it is only important that the plant stays moist, especially during the flowering period. A mulch layer can be applied, so that moisture and organic matter are held in the soil. However, it is important to note that nutrients are bound by the mulching. This decreases the availability of the nutrients and thus fertiliser needs to be applied in the first year. It is therefore recommended that the mulch layer be applied in the second year.
Since Hydrangea quercifolia 'Ruby Slippers', like all oak-leaved hydrangeas, bloom on two-year-old wood, should only be thinned out, thus removing the old shoots. After flowering or, if necessary, in the spring, if some tips are frozen back, the inflorescences should be removed. If a strong pruning is necessary, there will be no flowers in the following year.
This variety can be used as a solitary plant, in a group or also in a container.
