Magnolia 'Black Tulip'
The variety 'Black Tulip' is a hybrid of Magnolia 'Iolanthe' x M. 'Vulcan' from the breeder Mark Jury.
The story of the red magnolia is a story from New Zealand. New Zealand may well be called the centre of modern magnolia breeding.
Magnolia varieties known worldwide such as 'Felix Jury', 'Black Tulip', 'Genius', 'Cleopatra', 'Star Wars', 'Aurora', 'Purple Sensation', 'Ian's Red' (just to name a few) are inseparable from successful New Zealand breeders like Felix and Mark Jury, Vance Hooper, Oswald Blumhardt or Ian Baldick.
Magnolia 'Black Tulip' is a top breed that flowers very reliably at a young age. It grows as a narrow, upright, small tree that can reach a height of up to 500 cm.
The flowers of Magnolia 'Black Tulip'
Despite the rapid increase of so-called “dark red” varieties in the last 10 years, 'Black Tulip' still has its very own, high quality in terms of colour. Its flowers appear in a rich shade of purple. Depending on the incidence of light it resembles a black tulip, especially in its early stages.
Depending on the year, 'Black Tulip' flowers twice a year. The regular flowering period is from April to May and there is the potential that it will flower again in August or September. The ten to fifteen centimetres large flowers are cup-shaped and consist of sepals, stamens and carpels. The flowers are at the ends of the short shoots.
The right location for Magnolia 'Black Tulip'

Magnolia 'Black Tulip' is an impressive specimen plant and should have enough space, as this ornamental plant is perfect for individual plantings. Over the years, its dense branches increase in height and width.
Magnolia 'Black Tulip' is hardy, but it is recommended that the young plants be provided with a winter protection in the first few years. This beauty prefers a sunny to partially shaded location with a humus-rich and well-drained soil. In areas where there is a risk of late frost, a protected location should be chosen.
