Product information "Allium schoenoprasum"

Chives are a perennial herbaceous plant with up to 30 cm long, tubular, dark green leaves. Actually, it is a bulb plant, which is vegetatively propagated by daughter bulbs. Thereby chives form clumps with time. Terminal, dense, multiflora, round, violet/purple flowers develop from May. Chives prefer sunny to semi-shady locations with calcareous, humus-rich, moist, clay soil that is rich in nutrients. The plant finds use in herb gardens, in borders and perennial beds or as a bed enclosure. A chive hedge along a path is also very attractive. It is propagated by seeds in February/March in a greenhouse or cold frame or also by division later in the year. In order to harvest chives throughout the entire year, the plant can be forced if it is dug out in autumn. For this, remove the dried leaves and plant it in a pot, which then finds its place on a warm windowsill. Chives can be versatilely used in the kitchen. When finely cut, it is suitable as a sandwich filling as well as for cottage cheese, scrambled eggs and salad dressings, etc. Chives are an appetite stimulant and are very valuable due to their high content of vitamins and minerals. This plant has both ornamental value and is also ideal for consumption.
